It breaks my heart to begin to glimpse the reality of Black life in America. My own experiences and contexts had not revealed to me the true extent and pervasiveness of racism in this country. That began to change in the 2016 election. Trump continually stoked the fires and gave license to so many who had otherwise stayed quite. He tore the veil of civility off and let us see the longstanding and still very real issues our country faces today. The ease of people recording police interactions and the legislation which further codified this as a right in many places has helped lift the veil as well.
It is one thing to hear about racist incidents. In that we can get two very conflicting stories. One of the victim or victim’s family and one from the Police. The story can be spun all to easily to downplay or dismiss the relevance of race in the interaction. We are trained as a culture, at least in white culture, to trust and respect the police. Our own interactions of white privilege do not typically support the idea of such brutality and incivility. When it comes then to trying to decide who to believe it can be easy to take the cops version of events. It is even easier when we don’t want to accept that such blatant racism can still exist today in this country. Watching the videos it becomes impossible to ignore the reality. Watching the videos begin to pile up one after another makes it harder and harder to dismiss as isolate incidents. Watching the police regularly act with the same brutality to mostly peaceful protesters, black, latinx, white and the press make clear the problems. I hope that the current movement can affect real changes.
I read recently for some of my masters research a lot about what it means to be created in the image of God. I also read separately about expanding my ideas about God a work called the ‘The Vision of God’ by Nicholas of Cusa. I always thought of the image of God previously in more abstract terms such as rationality, the capacity to love, etc.
After doing more reading though, I think it encompasses more than that. I think we should take more seriously our diversity and how that relates to being made in God’s image. Our God is an infinite God. A God in which all good is contained. That means to better understand God is to see good in all its forms. It means to see our diversity in making up piece of the larger image, and that without each we miss seeing the full image of God. That means all sexes must be present in order to see the fullness of God. That means that all races must be present. That means all cultures have something precious to contribute in seeing the full image of God. We must protect each part the body not just for the sake of justice but because of the intrinsic value each member, or sex, or race. or culture brings to the fullness of the body. We must remember that when any part suffers we all suffer. When we fail to help any member we hurt not only them but ourselves and the church also. We must not narrow this to those already in the body but to protect all those who may one day enrich the body. We must remember that God desires all to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.
If you are looking for more concrete ways to help participate in the protests, lobby your state officials and members of congress. Donate to causes helping fight the battles everyday. Join one of those groups helping regularly to fight racism and promote equality and justice. And please, please vote. For more way to contribute check out below. I found this link recently and found some of resources in it very helpful in better understanding the dialogue and in providing some concrete ways to help.
